Session 3

Using Rewards

In this real scene, a mother discusses a bedtime routine with her daughter,  using a pictorial chart to explain the steps and the reasons for the routine. She highlights  the natural reward of a story and a chat to motivate her daughter and herself to stick to the routine.

Encouragement Rather than Cristism

This is a ‘before and after’ role-played scene comparing critical and encouraging parenting approaches. In Part 1 a mother criticises her daughter for making a mess while washing up and in  Part2, the mother instead focuses on what her child has done right; being encouraging and positive.

The Best Way to Encourage Children

In a real scene, a mother praises her three children for helping to prepare lunch. She employs a number of skills to ensure that the positive message gets through to  each of her children.

Session 4

Pressing the Pause Button

In this scene, a father angrily confronts his daughter as she comes home after being out late. Eventually, the father interrupts the row and calmly informs his daughter that they will deal with it in the morning.

Being Positive

A mother prepares her daughter for a trip to her cousin’s house. In Part 1, the mother becomes critical and uses lots of ‘Don’ts’, listing all of the behaviours she doesn’t want her child to engage in. This results in the child becoming defensive and hurt. in Part 2, the mother uses a much more positive approach and problem solves with her daughter about what she can do at her cousins.

Plan in Advance

This clip contains two short scenes where the parent tries to prevent problems by planning in advance with the children. 1) in the first scene, the father agrees on the TV schedule with his two children to avoid fights, and 2) in the second scene, a mother problem-solves with her two children ( one of whom has additional needs) about creating a good routine after school.

Session 5

There are no prescribed videos to be shown in Session 5. However, if you did not show Video 1.5 and Video 5.2 from Session 4, it may be an option to show them here.

Session 6

When the Child has the Problem

This scene shows a child talking about the impact of her brother’s special needs on her in the family. This is quite relevant as highlighting a way of listening to a sibling of a child with ADHD. The scene highlights the different stages of problem-solving in action. The parent works through the stages of listening, giving their point of view, thinking up solutions and agreeing to a plan.

Pressing the Pause Button

In the first part  of this role-played video, a mother gets caught into being critical and negative as she tries to support her son doing homework. This causes him to react and give up. In the second part ( video 1.2) the mother learns to press the pause button and chooses a more encouraging approach.

Establishing Routines

This is a role-played scene in which a mother sits down with her son to set up a homework routine. In Part 1, the mother explains the routine to her son by breaking it down into clear small step using a picture char and identifying rewards to motivate her son.In Part 2,  the mother, supports the child as he completes homework and they  then review the chart at the end, ticking the job off as complete and discussing the rewards to come.

Session 7

Plan in Advance

In this real scene a mother problem-solves with her two children about TV sharing, one of whom has additional needs. The mother does a great job to keep both children engaged despite their different needs. At one stage the son becomes distracted and helps him settle be giving him a paper clips to play with.

When the Child has the Problem

(if not shown in  previous Session ) – This real scene shows the stages of problem-solving in action. Using the example of a child who feels they are being treated differently to their sibling who has additional needs. The parent works through the stages of listening, giving their point of view, thinking up solutions and agreeing to a plan.

When the Parent has the Problem

In this real  scene, a father explores solutions with this son who is hitting out when he is angry. He does a good job of first listening to the son before inviting him to come up with solutions before they make a plan together. This scene highlights problem-solving skills when an issue is raised by the parent.
